Cicak di Brunei dan Cicak di KL sama saja, memang meletop! Assalammualaikum and WASSUP from Brunei!!

Yes it is true, i am doing my fair share of travelling these days as the completion of Sumolah draws nearer. I am currently in the SKY LOUNGE of the Bandar Seri Bagawan Airport waiting for my flight to Kota Kinabalu to pick up my kids who i miss so sorely. I miss them so much that it feels like i have been missing an internal organ which helps me breathe easier and a part of my heart which makes me whole.

I have been here for a show for Brunei Shell Marketing department but i received news that CICAKMAN is da bomb back home. This is so awesome. I saw the movie last week and told Yusry that he had done something really imressive for the Local Film industry and believed that it will do well. I am not saying that the movie was perfect ( my movies aren't perfect either) i did have some issues with the quality of acting in the film (AC, my friend, but in cicakman his characterisation was sadly annoying. Fasha Sandha i felt was horrendous in this one. Aznil irritated the hell out of me) but understandably Yusry is a technical director as opposed to an actor's director but looking at the bigger picture, this movie was outstanding for what it is, the first truly local CGI fest! and it really breathes the slogan NEW ERA FOR MALAY MOVIES and i personally believe it will be a hit with kids and malaysians in general.

Word on the grapevine is that CINTA is also a big hit in the country and this makes me really glad to know that the industry is alive and well and the support for it is forever growing. For your info Cinta is directed by Khabir Bahtia an excellent Indian Director who has now made malaysia his home. We worked as co-directors on my talkshow BILA LARUT MALAM before and am so glad that he has finally made a cinema feature. This has made so excited to come back and play.

If you ask me, the only way to experience a movie is through the big screen unless you have a kick ass hometheatre system that is. Still there is no substitute for going to the movies and sharing a couple of hours with a few hundred people, going an a similar journey with them, feeling the same feelings as them. I don't know if you realise this but for those few hours we as a people collectively through our minds have become one and is sharing one experience. freaky shit.

Thanks to all of you who have been supporting us in the film industry and your continued support i believe, is starting to pay dividends in the form of BETTER MALAYSIAN movies coming out. Although there will still be some crappy ones, good is starting to overpower evil. Let market forces rule their fate as it is the great equilizer and the key to weeding out serious karyawans from the, come to play-play and make fast buck types.

The new FINAS wajib tayang rule however is not helping independent producers, it is destructive and needs to be reviewed. Increase the number of theatres for malaysian movies since there is a surge of them, insteat of cutting the time one movie is shown before the next wajib tayang movie is shown. Currently one malay movie a week is the wajib tayang practice. How the hell are malay movies suppose to make their money back in such a short time. To help the industry, the government should by law encourage the exhibitors to do like the Thais and Koreans, increase the number of cinemas for local movies. For example, If an exhibitor has 11 theatres per cinema chain make 5 halls available for local movies and 6 for international releases. Can Malaysian Movies sustain the numbers to keep four theatres open, with your ongoing support and current market trends, the answer is HELL YES! Or the way the government can help is do like what the indonesian government used to do, BAN all international films from releasing in their country and maybe then we can finally see how much money local movies can really make. We don't want to go to that extreme, but those are steps which will move in favour of local filmmakers rather than always making us take whatever scraps that the exhibitors will give us. Something drastic needs to be done to sustain this malaysian movie boom and to further excite more Malaysians to watch more Malaysian products. That will encourage better quality products to come out because there will be more money in the industry. Who knows, the second coming of the Golden era of local films might be right upon us.

Trust me luke, for i am your father.

Dear Afdlin,

I am a bit 'buta' when it comes to the technical aspects of shooting a film/movie. Please enlighten me why do we need to do 'voice-dubbing' instead of recording the dialogues right when the actors are acting them out.

Yours sincerely, katakpuru

LOL. I was about to ask the same thing. Why do we neew to do voice-dubbing? The film looks fake.

didnt know cicak can be so famous...use to make fun of cicak....hope 1 day could watch it...
Bro seems that u r a loving family man and so into producing good movies...i've read somewhere that u would want to be like the late T.S P. Ramlee (correct me if im wrong)..Bro..i think you should take care of your health if you want to continue producing good movies and etc. or else your talent would be wasted...just like him...i think he died young...For your info i dont watch his movies...its so heartbreaking...so emotionally effective to me..

I couldn't have said it better myself...
I totally agree with your entry, 100%.
Thank you for taking words out of my mouth.

Cipkodok said...

the reason there is voice dubbing in this country is basically due to costs. If a producer opts for a live sound shoot automatically all costs go up example, set, location, film stock, number of shooting days and so far, most producers in malaysia are simply unable to afford the rise in costs because the returns are too small, if any.
For your information many countries in the world still practise dubbing as part of their movie making culture for example italy, thailand, as matter of fact on average most hollywood, bollywood movies still have at least 30-40% ADR/Dubbing work even if they shoot in live sound. In Malaysia It is still necessary if you want to shoot a scene in the middle of Petaling street to go for voice dubbing afterwards,... unless You could build another petaling street in a controlled studio environment,... or unless if you have enough money to pay everyone on petaling street near where you are shooting to shut up, then the option of live sound would be now open to you.
I personally am in favour of the live sound experience especially for dramatic pieces but it will be a catch 22 trying to convert the malaysian film industry to go all live sound unless our box office goes up to 10 million or so because if not, memang tak berbaloi buat filem.

Dude, thanks for your answer. I was thinking of making film one day. But I dont have any kind of erm, arty education background. You know what I mean? My question is, what does it need to be a good director? Why are the directors in Malaysia, keep producing the same kind of genre in their film? I dont want to say his name here, but I think all the films produced by him are "funny". Why would waste money on something that will be "laughed" at?

Hey Afdlin,

I just wanna say that i love the movies created by you guys. Great Job on it. You know Singapore does not really have a cinema that plays malay movies, so the only way is to get the DVD (Dun worry not pirated). and now, i have tons of movies made by you guys over the years!!! But it is worth my $$... I love to travel up to KL to watch the production in action. Kudos to the malaysian film industry.

wahai bapak kodok,

watched cicakman the other day, my opinion CGI okay especially the the surroundings, buildings and etc.
But when it comes to detail like in the scene where the cicak fell into Hairi's mug,you can see the flaw.

Storyline, begining okay, middle dragging till the end.

Come on malaysian directors.. enough of the love & cinta2 element la..you guys are killing us.

In the end, cicakman end up being a love story pulak.

On the malaysian film industry, i totally agree with you that the goverment should implement better rulings in favor of our local films, but to totally BAN international movies will only create a chain reaction where you can see the rapid growth of pirated movies.I know that they are not our local movies and it does not affect you directly, but still....somebody else's rice bowl.

anyway, salute to yusry for the cgi.. hopefully you can improve on the storyline and the jokes...Apek jokes are so predictable already.. got to get new ideas on joke too..

you guys should watch more US sitcoms..on star world..channel 70..get some ideas..
my 2 cents..

Dont know about malay movie situation now...but when i read the comments feels like its growing...which i think its good...
I think...movie makers should continue making good movies either its funny or not...

And for you bro...its good to know people like your funny movies..but do bear in mind i think if there is no uniqueness over time people will get bored...i.e like the same old jokes...It would be a good idea if you could think something different like making movies something like sepet, pgl etc...sorry i dont know much about malay movies..i mean why not u think about trying making not so funny movie or drama for a start..

Anyway, thats what i think you should try to diversified...he..he..kononnya la... At the end of the day its the risk associated with it and the RM that you should think....

p/s: this is just what i think...i think you could tell that i dont know much about movies and new in this movie critising thing..

Salam perkenalan untuk semua. pertama kali cuba melepak di sini sambil membaca entri "orang seni yang berbakat."

selamat maju jaya buat Afdlin.

sekian terima kasih.

Salam,

The way forward for FINAS is to channel their fund towards building more cinemas. It will helps the local film industries, rather than selective funding on certain films.

I would like to see `Malaysian Cinema' where Malaysian movies are shown everyday throughout the year without the wajib tayang rule.

2. band all international movies - get serious...!!!

3. please do make a discovery in making films. directors and producers please make other movies else than comedy an love. there's a lot of genre out there that can be discovered by malaysian movie makers. take a risk once a while. by then we should know where we're standing.

4. if you could make a high rise building that cost millions of ringgit then you could always find any datok or tan sri that could make a multi million ringgit movies.

5. eliminate FINAS. those birocrats officers just a dummy.

Ban international films? Bah, yea right.

If they, the locals, don't watch these foreign - sometimes thought provoking, sometimes controversial, sometimes pushing the boundaries of graphics realism, sometimes extremely poignant adaptations, sometimes underwear wetting hilarious movies, HOW WILL THEY KNOW AND LEARN TO MAKE GOOD MOVIES?

Piracy would escalate and it would be a problem to all. A worse problem (not that it isn't already?).

Malay movies must earn the trust, credibility and hard earned RM10 just like everyone else, by making them good. It's a chicken and egg situation, I know. To make money, then only you can make good movies. Well, everyone has to start somewhere. Did you think Thai movies became 'Shutter' or 'Iron Ladies' by just being complacent and expecting handouts?

Did you think the Japanese knew how to make 'The Ring', 'Ju-On' and the Japanese original of the movie "Lake House' by banning international films so that they could earn local dollars? How about Hong Kong and their "Infernal Affairs" which caught the attention of Martin Scorcese and eventual remade into "The Departed"? How about the recent Hollywood remake of Thai produced horror "Shutter" that is due next year? Were they accidently good or merely a product of handouts from the goverment?

I DON'T THINK SO.

Look around. The quality of music videos of our neighboring Indonesian artistes are better made and their songs possess more artistic merit than local ones. Admit it, other than Siti NurHaliza, Malaysian music industry has little to offer. The same is happening with the local movie scene.

We need to wake up. Yes, there needs to be a concerted effort to push Malaysian art scene to another level, as well as giving a hand to sustain it.

I think one of the most crucial aspects of improving the quality of the film industry in Malaysia is to attract more foreign money. If we could follow the lead of New Zealand and Australia, in attracting major film makers to produce movies here, it would mean so much to the nation. One, the experience and sharing of knowledge. Many vendors and locals involved will gather the recognition and experience needed. Two, the exposure gathered by local actors will help them equip themselves better in the art, which we direly need. Three, the money earned from providing such services can be greatly rewarding to the local scene. Think of the benefits to the NZ film industry reaped from the LOTR trilogy in New Zealand and the money from tourism there after. Think Matrix in Australia and cementing its name as a hotspot for budget movie making....

A simple marketing rule, of "thinking globally but acting locally"... we can upgrade ourselves to compete at international levels. Of course, the support from our government is crucial.... but we can't just sit in our cocoon and expect an unfair advantage to be passed on from others.

Hi guys,

Watchin BPC,Sepet, Gubra n Cinta.. had restored my faith in our local movies. Congrats to Cipkodok n Yasmin n Kabhir Bathia for producin such a wonderful movies.

However I do believed that with such so many CGI scenes won't help the film if the script is so bad. That's what happened to Cicakman..much the same like ""Ultraviolet" (the movie - Milla Jojovich)plenty of CGIs but lack of story tellin.. Couldn't sustain the viewers interest... A good movie for me is the one that keep U waiting and anticipating for the next scene, what's gonna happen to the character after this, how this will end not asking WHEN this will end.

Anyway, I disagree with Afdlin's drastic opinion on banning the International movies..that's not just the right way.. too many cons than pros to list here...

Talkin about increasing the no of cinemas for local movies.. well I believed there may be a chicken and egg issue here.. The exhibitors may claimed why do they need to increase the no. of theatres for local movies when the films produced are few.. and the movie local producers may said how are we to produce more films if the current regulations are not supporting them and the no of theatres are limited.

Well, then the answer is that we need more cinemas..But who are willing to invest?Businessman will only invest their money if they are confident they can get the return back. My wife is working with the largest Cinemas owner in Malaysia (you know whom) and she told me that to set up a cinema for instance at 1 Utama it costs them millions of RM...That's why certain producer like David Teo from Metrowealth bought their own cinema so that he can screened his own movies ...But then, I don't know how's it's goin now...

Well Afdlin, If you believed that the Syarat Wajib Tayang need to be reviewed and amended then the local industry must use their influence and lobby for change. This is the time for all the associations such as PAPITA/KARYAWAN/GAFIM/ and others to utilized the association function coz speaking with a united voice will be heard louder than one person....

Till then..

p/s Really luv BPC movies.. one helluva local action-comedy movies I've ever seen...

malaysian entertainment is still reflecting kebodohan masarakat. this is because kebanyakan yang terlibat dalam industri showbusiness malaysia 'tak abis sekolah'. so their work is worthless. is not enjoyed by intellects.

kalo setiap pelakun or artis kita ada degree art, baru lama kelamaan showbusiness kita mencerdikkan masarakat dan bukan hanya bikin mereka ketawa dan kemudian balik ke kereta dan beromen.
