Urgent message to all Malaysian Film supporters! Please take note. Go see gubra! It is a breath of fresh air and it is provocative malaysian cinema!

Hi Gang, am very sorry sebab i tak dan nak buat blog entry about my misadventures in Los Angeles this is because Los dan Faun is starting this sunday, so i am busy the gila babas, but i have to do this little deed as it involves me in the long run. HELP US MAKE BETTER MALAYSIAN MOVIES. Help support GUBRA. Me and some kodoks went on the ninth and we resoundly agree it is a movie which has everything and overall a powerful provocative film experience. In short, i am confident that you have never seen what Yasmin has done in GUBRA, in any other Malaysian film. GO SEE IT TODAY. TOMMOROW MAY BE TOO LATE.

TAKEN FROM THE VISITOR's BLOG :

PHANTOM AUDIENCE AT GUBRA?
TO ALL WHO ARE GOING TO SEE GUBRA, PLEASE READ THIS:

As they say, "kuch kuch hota hai". Something, something, is happening. Yasmin wrote on her blog that several friends, including her producer Elyna, had gone to the cinema to buy tickets for Gubra but was told that the show they wanted was sold out. But their friends who had managed to get tickets for the same show went into the hall and found it half empty.

Now, this is extremely odd. Unless there were some massive coincidence, it wouldn't be that every single one of the booked tickets were uncollected.

Read about it here.

Yasmin found out later that someone has been making large bookings. She says:

"What's been happening is this. Someone, or some people, out there have been making false bookings in large numbers. However, only half the seats are available for bookings. which explains why the screenings are very often exactly only half full.

"I don't know what can be done about it, but that, it would seem, is what's been happening."

Strange, isn't it?

Anyway, no one wants to speculate, and certainly no one wants to make any accusations. But what we want is to make sure those who want to see the movie are able to do so.

So, here's my suggestion:

DON'T MAKE PHONE OR INTERNET BOOKINGS. GO STRAIGHT TO THE CINEPLEX COUNTER AND WAIT UNTIL HALF AN HOUR BEFORE SHOWTIME. THIS IS WHEN THEY RELEASE THE UNCOLLECTED BOOKINGS. BUY YOUR TICKET THEN.

I think it should be alright to buy tickets at the last minute, because the first 10 minutes of showtime are usually ads and trailers.

So, here's hoping we are able to rectify the problem from now on.

Tell all your friends about this, SMS them, send emails, get the message through. Blog about it.

SPREAD THE WORD!

Hi there brudder,

FYI your movie pun kena cam tu gak when aku gi tengok BPC kat TGV 1 Utama ngan family aku. Aku booking online la 9 tickets for the whole family. But when aku pick the ticket masa tu tgk kat monitor ticketing guy tu penuh. Most of them online booking katanya la. Tp bila aku masuk panggung aku tgk separuh penuh aje. Seats sebelah kiri dan kanan mostly kosong tp masa ku tgk monitor tu penuh? So is there a conspiracy towards local movies? Is it?

Peace

couldnt agree more with afdlin. GUBRA is a very good film. trust me on this. rugi kalau tak tengok. itu pun kalau korang rasa korang suka tengok filem, suka filem berkualiti, suka pembaharuan dalam filem-filem Melayu atau senang cerita, tengok GUBRA kalau korang nak rasa bangga jadi rakyat Malaysia.

We are not toilet cleaners’
P. Selvarani
April 15:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KUALA LUMPUR: The producers of local comedy film Buli Balik may find themselves staring at a lawsuit for allegedly ridiculing flight stewardesses in the recent box-office hit.

The Malaysia Airlines Flight Attendants Association (MAFAA) has taken exception to a scene in the movie where an actress refers to stewardesses as “toilet cleaners’’.

The allegedly offensive scene shows a female patient waiting to see a psychiatrist, played by Harith Iskandar, remarking: “Orang ni, kalau sebutnya stewardess nak mengoratlah dan tulah... pencuci toilet aja diatas tu’’ (“This person, if you mention stewardess, he wants to tackle and such... only a toilet cleaner up there’’).

MAFAA secretary-general Ismail Nasamuddin A.W. Maxwell said it was unbecoming of the film’s producers and director, Afdlin Shauki, to belittle the profession of a flight attendant by equating it to that of a toilet cleaner.

“It is an insult to our profession. We are not toilet cleaners. The producers and director of the movie owe us a public apology for making such disparaging remarks about our profession,” said Ismail in a statement yesterday.

“They have cast a negative image of the profession and made our members unhappy and embarrassed.“

He said it was wrong to portray such a negative image of flight attendants as certain aspects of their job were on par with those of airline pilots especially when it came to the safety of passengers, adding that they had saved the lives of many passengers during emergencies in the past.

“Many cabin crew members now are highly educated

waaa now that you mentioned it, i experienced exactly the same thing. but back then i the word "conspiracy" didn't cross my mind. i figured it's just a coincidence or somethin'.

conspiracy against Yasmin Ahmad's movies? very possible indeed.

the PEOPLE can help. that's us.

Saya sebagai salah seorang penonton BULI BALIK langsung tidak merasakan yg babak stewardess sebagai seorang pencuci tandas adalah teruk.. we both know that these this is just the film, babak yang mengatakan "kiteorg cuci tandas je kat atas tuu..." sy rasakan langsung tidak menujukan kepada sesiapa..ianya lebih kepada komedi spontan.. watak tersebut hanya menunjukkan yang manusia punyai tekanan dan tekanan tersebut tidak hanya ditunjukkan secara terus.. kadangkala manusia menunjukkan yang dirinya tertekan dengan cara yang lain.. Jangan la disebabkan babak itu, isu besar timbul..Betul juga kata chip yang pencuci tandas tidak boleh dianggap hina, ianya juga dilakukan oleh ribuan manusia unuk mencari rezeki..semua rakyat malaysia punyai tandas di rumah mereka dan pastinya pernah mencuci tandas tersebut.. hina ke cuci tandas??so. buli balik hanya rekaan chip kodok kami.. tidak ada kene mengene dengan sesiapapun.. it is just film, afdlin just do it in real way.. we all love him.. he changed our film industry.. chip kodok.. kodokmu yang malang ini selalu bersamamu..

Afdlin is right. GUBRA is THE movie to watch!
I finally got the chance to catch Gubra after lunch today and I have to agree with Adlin. Totally. it IS a must-see! I can strike all chords there are with this movie. For this movie really reflects a genuine Malaysia which depicts the reality and true happenings in all walks of life in this country. It really breathes every breath of Malaysia in every scene from every aspect with regard to our diversity of language, culture, belief and tradition. I think words alone will not do much justice to this movie. One has to watch it to know what I mean.
On another note, how many times have we come across non-Malays who actually pay to watch a malay movie? Well, I have never bothered to ask that question before since I had this impression that the only Malay movies non-Malays watch and appreciate are the P.Ramlee ones and not more than that. Can't blame them though. Even I think twice before choosing to watch another strereotypical malay flick.
But, while in the theatre, I thought I heard people talking softly in hokkien. Not giving much thought to it and dismissing it by telling myself that they might be of the same breed as me (as in of mixed parentage) I didn't give it much thought and sat back and continued listening to Orked screaming. LOL. But when the movie ended and I did a quick look-around of the theatre, I was very amazed to find the people sitting behind me were indeed Chinese. A bunch of them and they were still discussing the movie. LOL. And, there were two mat-sallehs with them too! Finally the stereotype is slowly being broken. Kudos to Yasmin Ahmad!

hi there, i was in kl over the weekend and caught gubra at times square. (about less than a quarter of the theatre was filled up).and it was a saturday!! at first i was thinking that "whats wrong with msians? dont they watch movies at cinemas?". then i realise some trailers like tipah tertipu the movie/musical or watever it is was showed before the movie started...no wonder.. it made sense. as opposed to something so amazingly made like GUBRA...yasmin ahmad rock my socks off!! oh yah.more films like gubra should be made to open up society's eyes.i dunno..ijust weep if more movies like sembilu 25 or tipah tertipu 7half is gonna be made really soon in the future.- sno from sg

i was one of the person yang booked tickets through internet as early as possible so that we have secured a place in the cinema. mase tu still on the first week of screening. but not like others, i did pick all 12 tickets. but couldnt get one straight line sits as in the computer, banyak seats dah kene booked. so me and my frends decide kene pecah2 la duduk.
but when we were actually in the cinema, only 1/4 on the seats are occupied. and me and my friends manage to gets 2 rows of seats just for us. seriously. dapat la we all control the whole cinema with our gelaks yang mcm org gile. bole siyap borak2 lagi tu. (bukan borak kosong ye!).
so what actually happens? i'm still wondering till today.

i love reading your blog afdlin. so, nx project, xnak tengok teater musical lakonan nasya ke?? lantai t pinkie???

Sapa dah baca artikel hasil tulis Faisal Tehrani "Gubra Yang Sesat Lagi Menyesatkan"?

if gubra is worth seeing then i am telling you guys this article is also worth a read..

there are some valid points brought forward like why, a 'bilal' boleh 'redha' dengan kehadiran pelacur2 sebagai jirannya? adakah ini tahap tolak ansur terlampau yg kita mahukan sangat?

And this piece really got me thinking..

"Iyalah, kita mahu percaya mereka
melacur kerana tiada pilihan lain.
Kenapa
merendahkan ayat Dengan Nama Allah Tuhan Yang Maha Pengasih dan
Penyayang ini?"

Apa sebenarnye msg yg tuan direktor pilem gubra cuba sampaikan? her own version of islam?

think about it.. better yet.. go read the full article of faisal tehrani.
