BULI BALIK 's VOYAGE BEGINS TODAY, ALL OVER MALAYSIA! MAY THE JOURNEY BE A MEMORABLE ONE. INSYAALLAH. LET IT BE KNOWN TO ALL FRIENDS!!

It is the night before my baby comes alive and i want to share with all of you my intimate thoughts on the matter. BULI was a dream i had as a teenager to make my first movie. BULI BALIK was a promise i made to myself, to right the wrongs oy days past, to be able to do the one thing the genius P.Ramlee was never able to do, to own his own creative works. I am writing this down with tear filling my eyes as i remember the day i read how P. Ramlee died a pauper. How a great talent of this magnitude from this country was never allowed to reap the benefits of his own intellectual property really mystifies and disgusts me.

BUt this is the current state of this country even right now. NOBODY respects other people's rights to intellectual property. They feel it is their right to infringe on this rights because illegal music, films and software are being openly sold everywhere so this must mean that it is ok. When i say nobody. i mean from the top level down to normal people like you and me. I include myself because i admit. i also fall into the self-styled culture of checking out the latest foreign films from your friendly neighbourhood dvd PUSHER.

BUT consider this, What if suddenly it was ok to buy your lawyers stamp from a roadside stall or audited accounts from Petaling Streets at a discounted price. Or even giving your pay to someone else, after you have spent all your sweat and time in trying to do the best job u can, why? because everyone's doing it. SO why not you? "That is different!", you say, "Our job is not entertainment!... this won't happen to us". Just think about it, what the hell makes u think that u r so special, that something like this might not happen to you?

TV stations do not respect the rights of small production companies, because they want ALL RIGHTS to your product at an offered price where it should just be for a license fee for a one run or two run to air the said programme. They pay peanuts and so like a bunch of hungry monkeys we swarm over it to eat whatever the scraps is left and not fight for the system to be CHANGED. TV Broadcasters should just be BROADCASTERS and let the creative people do the creative work.

We are a country that is slowly killing it's creative minds because the work we do is not considered tangible like being an accountant or even a clerk at a bank. Banks won't touch creative people and put ridiculous demands on us in trying to secure a loan, only to later say no to the loan because of the age old banking mantra "NO TRACK RECORD". SME banks won't touch creative production companies with a ten foot pole because we are considered HIGH RISK. Like any business worth any grain of salt and not illegal is not high risk. BUSINESS IS ABOUT RISKing!!!

People just take what is currently happening because we all say "well i guess that's how things are in this country!". I say stop the bullshit and let's rewrite the books on how 'things are' in the country

Lemme let all of you in on one open industry secret that might shock you, besides Siti Nurhaliza and a few other people who are just talents (great talents though they may be) in this industry, NO other persons in the creative field of the entertainment industy in MALAYSIA ever makes any good money from it. "You look ok afdlin" some might say, and to the my response is, Yes, I truly am blessed because i am a talent as well as a creative person but i think about all the writers, songwriters, animators, directors etc in this country and i know, most of them live hand to mouth. AND these people are the ones who create all the great songs, poems, writings, scripts that drive this whole industry.

So what can we do about it. Personally at this point in time, i have no frakking clue! but i know that that the parliament has to pass a bill or something to give greater protection to a potential multi-billion dollar industry for it to continue surviving and even flourish.
Why was propaganda films a great important part of the war effort in all the world wars? The reason is because the media affects our mind either subconciously or conciously on any level. It is as important in building the image of a country as the twin towers or the Sepang race course. Our culture, our paradigm and the way we are, are reflected through our films.

FILMS are great tools to window our culture and the hearts of our people. HELP US HELP U MAKE THIS COUNTRY GREAT. Protect us. Give our livelyhood back to us. You take away our soul when you take away our creativity.

So, this is it people. I do not want to die a pauper and this is a promise i made to myself and to the late great P.Ramlee. To own and probably benefit from my own IP. If we don't protect our IP and make it worth something, then we might as well be living in the P RAMLEE days.

Thank you for supporting BULI BALIK and my creative endeavours. For those of you who don't like what i do, support the ones you do, because believe me,you make a difference to them. KEEP ON SUPPORTING MALAYSIAN FILMS.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

Brader Adflin, i did not know that the situation is the same in Semenanjung. Here in Sarawak it was reported that a Iban new budding Iban artist/singer picked up by a large record cmpany will be paid about RM700 for an album of 10 songs. If the song becomes a hit (here the audience for Iban songs can reach 30,000 - at RM19.90 per album)all will go to the recording company...hopefully things get better with our Big Brother artists leading the battle over there....otherwise we all kena buli di sini :)

Yo Cif Kodok!! We kodok will support you all the way bro. I'll be watching your BB tomorrow nite. i must say reading your blog nearly everyday (mcm baca buku teks book utk SPM,.... study SPM pun tak camnie) have given me a fresh new look on our industry. a new semangat to be a malaysian and know that there are people like you, willing to swim against the flow of our own preconceive, narrow river. i will pledge to you that one day i will work with you to rock this industry up. change the minds of our other malaysian, bring malay back to watch our great malay films or malaysian produced film, let other homosapiens in the world realise and know who malaysian are, know and capable what we can offer in the film and entertainment industry (just like China/Hong Kong/India dll). cheers take care...

p/s we won't let u die in pauper kedana & gud luck with Buli Balik, i'm sure u'll do as good or maybe better than BPC.

I believe this message of yours should be printed on a plaque and should be circulated among every person who is involved in the entertainment industry.

Good luck with the movie. I hereby pledge to buy only original copies of Malaysian movies.

Well said, bro.

I know you feel the sting on piracy as your hard earned pay have been taken out of your hands (although I personally never seen your work in the pusher's CD folder).

I believe among other reason of piracy is the way distributors conduct their business. I admit I buy PIRATED FOREIGN VCD/DVD, because of 2 reasons:

1. it can't be found in local stores (zoolander, anybody?)

2. I'm paying literally in USD for my copy of entertainment. it's at times cheaper to buy from Amazon. that fueled the piracy and in the end, effected our own industry.

if we Malaysians are earning RM2000 a month, those in US are earning USD2000/month.but they are paying in average USD15 for CDs, VCDs and DVDs which is roughly the same as what we are paying (RM60).

yes, the market is smaller than those giants, that they can survive with smaller profit per product. but how does the country music, those bands and movies which never made out of their country?

I believe we need regional price for these products and lessen the gap between pirated and original ones. only then our consumers have more reason to choose quality original products over cheesy pirated ones.but then, who wants less money?

another factor that I may add is, some directors, and producers, are being unfair to us consumers. They want us to buy their products, but it is of low quality, and not worth the RM20 price tag.this then caused a domino effect and other directors with good products lose their trust. If you really love a movie (not necessarily the actor, actress,or director), then they would own an original copy already, even just for the sake of seeing the next line of good product.

That's my reason of owning not more than 10 local production (including my lost BULI VCD). sorry, I don't buy pirated local movie.alang2 beli lah kan...

oh, and I hope the home video version of BULI BALIK and BPC won't suffer the same fate as SALON vcd version, which according to one of the production crew, has poor quality, and not worth the buy. I'm yet to see the VCD version, so I can't really say.

wipe your tears, bro. buruk ah orang tua nangis...

Your grievances and frustrations are understandable. I admire you and your colleagues for believing in what you do and hope that one day what artists deserve to get for their efforts to entertain people would finally come. I believe it will one day. No matter how hard and tough the situation is, you and your colleague are not discouraged to give your very best to people. Thank you for that.

You know what afdlin, it is pity that artists in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s were the ones gravely get little or nothing for their talents and creativity. The bloody pirates were the king of show business. These scoundrels and jackasses robbed the artists and the industry(sorry for the foul words), making money of other people sweat and efforts. IP protections are non-existence. The cancer grows in the system. The reason I say that because the 90s and present artists are slightly better than the predecessors even though the pay checks are nothing to shout about. Tell me if I am wrong, single out for me who purely retired filthy rich from Malaysian entertainment industry since 1950s. None, right. The ones today had to venture into production business or any kind of business to be successful or a millionaire. At least, for the female artists, if lucky, they get married to a wealthy man. Good life is taking care of. We are actually far from the hollywood and other developed entertainment industry where one big break can make one filthy millionaire, or at least retiring rich by being an artist. I personally blame some public citizen for undermining the whole efforts to kill piracy. Lack of genuine support, hangat-hangat taik ayam katakan. Yet enforcement is still questionable and insufficient though they are trying really hard on the subject. Those rushes appear in the newspapers are just figurative, blinding the public eyes that the job is done. Well, nowdays public is well educated. You can't fool them any longer, letting the big jaws of the hook.

So, it is about time now that artists like you deserve to be paid with premium pay checks for creative efforts. My advise, continue to do your very best and I am sure you will succeed in the end and not die as a pauper. Pray a lot to GOD too, bro. Insya Allah your prayers will be answered by HIM. The important thing is your intention is due to Allah only.

p.s.: This is my personal opinion. Don't be offensive for those found it is . Open your mind and heart. Supporter of freedom of speech.

Anonymous said...

hi kaptjarcher,

if you are suggesting funding by venture capitalist. Truthfully, forget it. Dont even think about it. Elsewhere, there are VCs doing that but Malaysia, out of the story. Funding film makings are not in their radar. This word came from a VC himself.

cheerio!!

Adflin,

One thing i like about you is that spontanious you. creative, funny, and just full of life. Nobody knows the life that you lead or the rest of the artist in Malaysia. what can we do? I for one collect malay VCD, anyone.. I seldom go to movies.. but in your case it was aceptional la... bosan buat kerje so, cilok gi tengok wayang.. cool gile. Only one comment, the one thing people tend to do wrong is to do it too much.. i mean.. trying too hard and letting the jizt or movie go. besides apek senario, you are a comedian and you have your own style... I would advise to put back the comedy in your movies as they have been the heart of all your movies... don't try too hard but all your movies rocks.. wish i was im them.. people say we have the same built, size, and looks... except i look cuter.. hahah anywyas good luck bro

Bro Afdlin, I understand what you are trying to say and completely agree with you. There was this scientist, Shuji Nakmura that have discovered LED that can replace your conventional light bulb. He only got 20000 yen (which is about RM750 kalau nak compare nilai dgn Mesia, cam dpt RM 200 jer) as a bonus for his findings. And the company untung a lot(dah ler discovery ni bukan big project-->kire dia buat sorg2 secara sambilan, experiment suke-suke jer..).After about 20 yrs later he got settled for 840 million yen. My point is, an advance country like Japan took like 20 yrs to sort this man. I wonder how long Malaysia will take? No wonder all the intellectual and creative minds prefer not to stay.Kalau aku pun, why the fuck nak syg Malaysia if Malaysia xcare about you. Damn!
ps: Nakamura is living in the US now.

Anonymous said...

Thank you Afdlin. You have finally said what a lot of creative people/artists have wanted to say for a long time but daren't. Here's a list of things that we consumers can do to change the system. After all it all boils down to the consumer. Or it should. We pay money. We should decide what we want and how things should happen. Right?

1. Don't sit silent and accept crap when you go to the cinema. When there are scratched prints, bad sound, film cut off before the credits finish rolling, sound leaking from other halls etc. etc. etc. DEMAND YOUR MONEY BACK! And let the management of the cineplex know your dissatisfaction. Tell all your friends about your experience.
2. Petition your MP, local councillor, the PM, DPM the minister of art, anyone you think has a responsibility to changing the system. Tell them about the need to review censorship laws.
3. If you've paid money to watch a play, film, dance or music performance that you feel wasn't worth your money, don't keep quiet. Make relevant complaints to the relevant people responsible.
4. Campaign to change censorship rules so that we can get access to creative works which otherwise would only be available through pirates. Yeah so everybody says we should not buy pirated goods. But can you imagine what would have happened to Malaysia if we had no pirated computer software? We'd still be living in the pencil and paper age.
5, Campaign stop politicians treating us like ignorant children waiting for hand-outs.

bro,
buli balik chun beb. cuma ada a few bende kecik yg buatkan film nih kantoi sket. cth nyer:
(1)is it ' siapa kalah kene karan' or 'siapa salah kene karan'?
(2)masa ending tuh, masa nordin tarik kabel karan tuh, nk cucuk kat AC, tapi tak sampai...tp kalu tgk betol2, kabel tuh kendur lagik la bro, bley tarik lagi
(3)rasanyer scene videoclip Tan Sri Michael tuh cam penah tgk, ala2 scene vclip dlm film 'love actually'..
btw, bro the show was totally enjoyable. cuma i hope in ur next project, u'll do better & greater than this. coz u know wat....filem melayu yang aku tonton kat wayang cuma filem ko jerk....

How to change this around lah? Ada suggestions on how we can help? i.e. tulis surat kat menteri ke (eh, menteri baca ke surat daripada rakyat jelata?), picket depan parlimen ke..
Just wondering, coz I really don't know how this works.

brother afdlin....

saya dah tgk buli balik and saya sgt terhibur... lagi2 kalau scene tu melibatkan AC Mizal... storyline yg menarik... ada 2 benda je yang buat stim kasi potong 1. Monitar belakang adibah nor tu tulis "Siapa Kalah Kena Karan" tapi game show tu "Siapa Salah Kena Karan" dan lagi satu.. kenapa buat ending mcm tu... terkejut jugak saya.... emm... apa pun U ROCK! u among the best director in malaysia.... Hidup Filem Malaysia!
