I have been working in this industry professionally for about 16 years, but i realised that it actually finally took off when i had proper representation in the form of a manager and a personal assistant. With their help i am able to focus more on the creative work while they concentrate on the nitty gritty stuff, which includes taking care of the product, ME! and Liasing with the clients.Being a bit spoilt now i think, i don't know or cannot imagine how i ever did without these people.
At first i was Managed and P.A-ed by my wife for for a coupled of years, then realising that we had a problem because we couldn't differenciate when we were 'Artiste and Manager' and when we were 'husband and wife' it had to be stopped before something worst happened. Next, my wife would just manage me and my sister in-law P.A.-ed for me for awhile. My sister in-law was wasted in that position because she is capable of sa much more. She is now one of my main producers in our company and my right hand man. Before she stop P.A.-ing me, i met my current manager, SHIMA.
It wasn't until then, 6 years back, that i found somebody solid who could do the two jobs as well as my previous managers if not better.
My current Manager/PA is an extraordinary woman. She started out as only a wardrobe assistant, eventhough she has a diploma in Fashion Design, when i first met her at ANTAH UTV while I was still shoooting BILA LARUT MALAM and in one occassion when we were brainstorming for sketches, i asked for suggestions and out of all the production crew that was there the only person who dared to give a suggestion was her. I was shocked initially, but when i got to know her a little better i realised that she had drive and ambition.
I offered her a job to become my personal assistant and to start learning to manage me, something she has no knowledge whatsoever about and she took up the challenge with a lot of courage and the eagerness to learn.
I told myself, this girl is gonna be somebody someday because she has got the attitude of a mad person and is willing to give anything a shot. It wasn't easy for her in the beginning, because everything was new plus i am quite hard on people when it comes to work solely because i want them to learn.
In this six years, besides managing me, she is also currently my 2nd Assistant Director on my film shoots and she occasionaly does production management for my company. All these skills she acquired by being around the right people, asking the right questions and experiencing production and management first hand.
Recently she expressed to me her desire /dream / ambition i.e. to be a FILM DIRECTOR!!!... wah lan terror or not terror.
Personally i am not surprised. She has the passion to do anything she puts her mind to and it would be wrong for me to be selfish and not support her natural evolution into better things.
So, with my commitment in supporting her to reach her goal, i have decided to lessen her workload to let her concentrate on things she wants to do. She will still be managing me but i am now left searching for a new personal assistant.
