Thank you , to all the well wishers, alhamdulillah to god and bugger me, now i am damn stressed man

I suddenly feel the obligation on my person to keep coming up with good movies because of all the accolades. What i do not want is for people to expect me to come up with the same kind of thing over and over. I am a person who gets bored very easily when i feel i am doing something which is not challenging or something which i feel i have done before. So that is why i am constantly trying to do new stuff. My predicament, i feel is, I wanna do some serious stuff this year, besides the comedy stuff which people have always known me for, but i know most people will still expect it to be a comedy. I think these people will be somewhat shocked, but i am adamant to succeed! and i am certain people will enjoy the new experience.. Hey P.Ramlee did both serious and funny movies extremely well, so it CAN be done. It's not anything new.

Alhamdulillah for my three awards at the Anugerah Skrin, i feel really gratified that the jury GOT THE MOVIE and what it was trying to say. It was never just a comedy and i am so happy that at last our efforts were recognised, having said that, just imagine that BULI BALIK never got the nod to go to the ASIA PACIFIC FILM festival because they feel a pontianak reflected us more as Malaysians . All i can say is...The selectors can imperiously kiss my brown buttocks for all i care.

Interesting story i heard recently about ANG LEE who was in this country to shoot parts of his new spy thriller 'LUST' with Tony Leung. Apparently, after shooting concluded here, ANG LEE has vowed never to return here ever again!! so saaad.
The reason (i asked in wonderment) i have been told is that the ministry of home affairs demanded to view all of his rushes! (film negatives to all those non film people out there). I guess because they want to check if ANG LEE had shot anything offensive about Malaysia, like putting the twin towers near a river in Melaka. SO i guess let's all just forget about any more hollywood money or technology transfer coming into this country ever again, for now. With all our red tape, Malaysia will never be an attractive venue for international film companies to shoot their productions here, eventhough we have some of the best crew and facilities in the region. Not to mention some awesome locations.

Just got back from Jakarta for the Malaysian Film Festival there, and let me say, it almost was the biggest waste of time for our movie industry professionals to go there, because when Kekwa decided to take over the event, it became a textile (batik and songket) and malaysian fashion festival.

I guess not enough foresight caused for the powers that be to schedule our little Malaysian festival at the same time as the Jakata International Film Festival. So, next to no one turned up to most of our screenings. The screening for BULI was done on a monday morning during working hours and we had 5 people watching it. Looking back, i wasn't even sure wether they were Indonesian or were just the FINAS workers who were taking care of the film's projection. We were lucky however that we had some friends in the indonesian film industry who got some local film students to attend for us. In one incident however, the film students from the jakarta's film academy who attended the festival were basically forced to come out of the screening hall of Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam 2 to go and watch a fashion show next door because there was nobody there and some Kekwa people were unhappy. The screening of the film was delayed by three hours. Oh did i mention that they made Pak Selamad Rahardjo (One of Indonesia's premiere film icons), who was there for a dialogue session post movie screening, was forced to watch the fashion show as well. A gentleman and a very sharp man, pak selamad i saw was quite visibly upset as his intention to be there at the jakarta international convention centre that day was purely for the film festival. To not make us feel left out, other malaysian artistes were also treated really poorly to the point that we felt like we were there as decorative figures to make some people look good. People who didn't even care about what is currently happening in the malaysian film industry. Some of the KEKWA people we met didn't even care to say hello to us there, I guess that would have taken up too much off their shopping time.

Me and Hans went to a night screening of BULI at Planet Hollywood KC21 Jakarta and managed to meet up with a few MEDIC students there who told us that they found out about the event by chance. They came in 1 hour late because they had just found out from an embassy guy who they had just bumped into.

I really feel that there were some people on such a power trip at that event in Jakarta, and they used the celebrities and film workers to make them look good, but have no respect for or care for what we do.

I guess I don't even have to mention that no thought or proper planning was put into the whole fiasco in jakarta, for example the door gift for unsuspecting atendees of the festival was a pewter bottle opener with the KLCC on it. Most softdrinks have screwtops on now. the only drinks which would really need bottle openers would be beer and soy sauce (KICAP TAMIN) bottles. Isn't that an odd gift coming from a muslim country. Now they are already talking about doing a Malaysian Film Festival in London, i think the malaysian students' association there could organise the event better than the ministry people here. We need people with passion to work on something like this.

In closing, the Aungerahs were great, but i felt what really made the night for me was the opportunity to sing with my old pal Zainal Abidin, it really brought me a lot of joy and took me back to a place where malaysian music was truly beautiful, the ikhlas concert. i shall never forget performing there and i thank god once again for letting me experience all this in my life and for all his blessings. Alhamdulillah.

Oh well, i am off to MATAKING, Sabah to dive again for a couple of days.... to clear my mind a bit from all the clutter and to experience god's greatness underwater. Will be safe.

Power to the people.

Afdlin

PS untuk semua yang ingin tahu, inilah my next project which i would like to involve the online community with...

Afdlin,

I'm a Malaysian who resides in Jkt. I was fuming mad for not knowing there was this Titian Budaya event in Jkt which involved the screening of Malaysian movies.

Thanks to the organiser (whoever they may be)for wasting a lot of money and not getting people to come. Publicity on the event was zilch.

Takpela Afdlin, Insya-Allah ada peluang lain which could be used to effectively promote GOOD Malaysian movies.... and i really mean the GOOD ones.

i have to agree on malaysian student associations are better partners than the ministries in organising anything in the uk ... past experience, one month before, they claimed they can do it on their own, they dropped the ngo and commercial partners ... one week before the event, they faxed letters to participants saying it's cancelled.

okey..I wanna say I lurve the imprint of the foot in the sand. Lurve it.
Secondly I know this is out of the blue but I have a question: How come the movie/film/entertainment industry in our country doesn't venture out of the ordinary...hmm..genres? We have comedy, 'CHENTA'(ni paling fofular), hantu horror which tak brape scary and thats about it? I think?
But I do salute the wonderful movies that have been coming up and out lately...PGL,PHSM, Buli, Sepet, Gubra, Cinta...qualitas nya bagus..saya suka. Tapi dari segi selection genre blom meluas kan? Ini soalan saja.. :) Jikalau sudi untuk berbenchang mengenai topic ini secara mendalam, I'd be interested in reading bout it.

Assalamualaikum..

First of all, I must say that I've always adored Afdlin's work. He's the person that we, Malaysians, should be proud of for his brain and vision. What I wanna say here is from the view of an audience, who wants more of Afdlin's work in this industry.

To be honest, I'm not a fan of Malay movie, what with it's lack of quality and many things I dont have to mention. Yes, it's true that not every Malay movie are bad but still, only a few could capture my heart and drag my feet to the cinema. People may say 'We must support our local industry', but have we ever wonder why? Is it because we are Malaysian so we MUST watch Malay movies (even if it's not qualified to be called movie)? I say, SORRY, why must I waste my money and watch some crap? I'm a consumer, aren't I? I still have the power to choose. People will also say ' If the locals wont support local industry, how will local industry develop and grow?' I say, think outside of the box first, find some good stuff and stop making stupid film just for money's sake-that's when people like me will support the local
industry.

I will always support people like Afdlin & Yasmin Ahmad (to name a few) for their amazing job. Congratulation for your success in Anugerah Skrin recently, Afdlin. Hope you wont stop making good movies, and may Allah bless you all the way.

Terima kasih kerana menceritakan the other side of story about what really happened at Titian Buadaya programmes. You know in Malaysian medias, all about success of the programmes.

Allow me to suggest, i think you should do at least one `serious' movie.(Not that i didnt enjoy all ur films) Because to me, every comedian actor has his sensitivie side of him that make him or her interesting like why Robin Williams did Good Will Hunting.Like Chaplin and his deep mataphor and symbolism of life in his acting .

Anyhow, goodest luck to you. Support you all the way.

And Congrats on winning the awards at Anugerah Skrin!! I think my house was shaking when I was shouting for joy when your name was announced 3 times as the winner :) Everytime you're in the category, I will start my chant of "Afdlin, Afdlin, Afdlin..." And yay! Afdlin,
I think that's not big foot. My guess is your next project will be somehow related to Kesultanan Melayu Melaka. Wey, itu gambar tapak kaki Hang Tuah le korang!
On the Malaysia Film Fest, I was also sadden knowing how poorly planned the event was. Promoting products needs promotion of the events. I hope kementerian people are reading your entry on this. I don't think it would take RM5 million to pay a radio station to promote the event, or get an interview in one of the TV stations. Kalau artis Indon datang sini, berkejar2 rancangan TV/Radio kita nak interview diorang. So, bila kita pegi sana, why not kita yang kejar2 their media pulak? Hahahah... mesti aggressive maaaa...

Hi Afdlin,
Congratulations on your win! Saw you, Shuhaimi Baba and Maya Karin huddling together at the cafe in Jakarta Hilton (oh, now Sultan) but was too intimidated to approach. Now, I think that was rude behaviour on my part!

Most Malaysians in Jakarta didn't know there was a Malaysian Film Festival or a Titian Budaya thing going on, or else we would have dragged our Indon friends for a look-see. If the Ministry had done their homework, they could have latched on to the very popular Jakarta Film Festival which was going on at precisely the same time. (I actually thought you were invited to Jakarta for that event).

They're trying very hard to sell Malaysia here, but alas, hardly know the market. But you know, very few people need the government to hold their hands nowadays, so if Siti Nurhaliza can get Indons into a frenzy, so can you. Really. d

Btw, i saw buli balik 1st on an original VCD many moons ago, then buli (on tv3 few days ago). I think u have progressed in terms of lightings, storyline coherency, and many more aspects from buli to buli balik. Which is good kan, sequel gets better. Tahniah for another round of accolades. And keep progressing (though sorry aa ur tummy pon agak la makin progressive these days. Takpe janji sehat n happy)

Bro Afdlin,

Tapi aper yg aku tgk, ko terlalu berhati-hati bila nak menjawab soalan supaya tak menyinggung hati Prof.

Tapi, prof pulak bila jawab soalan, selamba badak dia jer jawab tanpa jaga hati ko. Dengan berlagaknya dia kata, andaikata juri yg memberi kemenangan kepada filem ko tu ditukar, mungkin filem dia yang menang. Ko tak terasa ker?
Aper dia ingat filem dia tu baguss sangat?!! Ko pulak Bro Afdlin, dengan perasaan rendah dirinya bersetuju dengan Prof?

Kamon bro! Jangan sama tarafkan komedi ko dengan komedi dia. Memang, dia ader gelaran Prof. Tapi tak semestinya filem dia educated! Aku tgk filem dia terlalu bodoh untuk ditonton. Dan ko bro, org dah angkat komedi ko sebagai lawak urban yg educated, tolong jangan jatuhkan status tu sama dengan Prof Razak!

to bro Afdlin!
i'm a Chinese..
but u know wert..
i really enjoy all of your movies..starting from Buli to Buli Balik then Baik Punya Cilok...although all three of the movies had strong comedy elements, nevertheless, those movies do have it's fair share elements of Malaysian identity..what i meant here is those movies are undoubtedly suits to all Malaysians regardless of races or religions....now i'm looking forward to another masterpiece of your movie Sumo-lah...afterall, got u, Patrick Teoh, Awie and also Gurmit Singh...

but what i dun like in your movie (sorry, no hard feelings. it's just my opinion) is that, ur movie is like other Malay movies when it comes to audio..sometimes, the dialogues are too echoic..bergema-gema until drowned out the sound that makes me can't really hear what are the actors/actresses saying...and the bakcground music or noise really drowned out the dialogues..but other than that, your movies were PERFECT!!

yesterday nite, i watched the Sensasi on TV3...u really show too much respect to that Prof A Razak Mohaideen larr...u r a great director and on par with him if not better than him...u shouldn't beri muka to him lar...he is too cocky and arrogant..so what if he had the Prof title in front of his name..that doesn't mean he is a good director..his movies especially that Nana Tanjung are nothing but just a carbon copy from any Bollywood movies unlike yours are more original and centralized on your thoughts!...although i do agree on his view that those who din watch a movie has no right to criticize the movie, that Prof A Razak Mohaideen (in my opinion)is nowhere near your standard in terms of storyline..however, u deserve praising because u show respect to him and his movies..

lastly, i really enjoy your Ah-Ha especially the sketches on Ba..Bila Di Sekolah Dulu and Along Bukit Beruntung..both videos recorded quite high viewership on YouTube! woohoo!!!!

i hope u can always keep up your movie standard and change those mindset of many non-Malay people on Malaysian movies!!

rasanya i lebih minat dgn yr singing compared to yr acting..and honestly i rindu nak dgr u nyanyi lagi..what really happened to yr album ya! or maybe i just came out from bertapa..hehee...
i haven't had the chance to watch yr buli balik, and baik punya cilok..maybe one of these days i will try and watch..
apa2 pun i hope u continue doing what u perjuangkan selama ni..for the best of industri hiburan di malaysia..to change malaysian mindset and to instill what creative and quality really means...
anyhow..i know u are very the busy with all films projects but why not for next year 2008 u buat project album pulak..if it takes too much of yr time maybe you can make a collabo album with friends..u can invite all great malaysian singers to sing with you..that will be great and i will be the first person to buy yr album...something to think about ha!!

cheers
